Let's Talk about Goal Setting and Goal Getting

Setting Your Goals

“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” -Napoleon Hill

Every goal starts with a desire, a vision, a dream. You know what you want, so the first step is to write it down. Make a list of your goals and determine if they are long-term or short-term goals. This will help you to get clear about your aspirations. I believe writing your goals down makes them real. It moves your ideas from the abstract to the start of the process of making them concrete.

Now that you have your goals written down, give them a timeline for achievement. Having a deadline helps with motivation along the journey to achieving your goals.

Getting Your Goals

“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.” -Denis Waitley

Getting to your goals will require you create detailed plans for each goal. Think about and write down how you will achieve them, who can help you and what you need to do to stay focused. One of the most important things you must do is have a positive mindset. You have to truly believe you can achieve your goals.

Make sure you also manage your expectations and write down any perceived obstacles that may deter you from reaching your goals. Draw a vertical line next to this list and then write down possible solutions to these hinderances. You may find that many issues are resolved right there on the paper, but some may require further action.

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” -Mario Andretti

Action is the last step to getting to your goals. Consistent, focused steps will get you there. I think it is important to celebrate those steps along the journey in addition to reveling in the joy of achieving your goals. If you find yourself procrastinating or stuck, go back to your plans and adjust them if needed and use them as a reminder of your why.
