The Latest Insecure Episode Made Me "Lowkey Happy"

Who knew an awkward fall would lift my spirits so much? The past few months have been heavy. We are all experiencing the effects of the Corona Virus pandemic. The deaths, uncertainty, restrictions and loss have taken a toll on everyone on some level. This was compounded with the trauma of watching the videos or reading about Black men and women being killed by police, or being racially profiled. The senseless death of George Floyd (I still haven’t watched the whole video), the protests and looting that ensued, and the insensitive comments of the current president about said protestors have had me mentally and emotionally drained.

So, when I tuned into Season 4, episode eight of Insecure and saw Issa, skin glowing as bright as her smile, clad in a red designer cutout blazer, fall flat on her face in front of everyone at a bar where she was meeting up with Lawrence to talk, I burst into a loud laughter that was refreshing to my heavy spirit.

Lawrence gets up from the bar and extends his hand to help Issa up, but she tells him she’s got it, lies there for like five awkward minutes and then gets up and proceeds with their…date?

This episode gave me all the feels, which surprised me because I have never been #TeamLawrence. Gasp! Yes, up until this season, I didn’t see the chemistry or strong compatibility between the two central characters.

I came to the realization that I’d judged Issa and Lawrence’s chemistry based on when they let us into their world in season one. It was during the demise of their relationship, so the playful banter, flirting, honesty, maturity and chemistry wasn’t present. This episode gave me a glimpse into what likely brought them together, and it was a huge testament to the power of effective self-work, growth and maturity.

The Other Side of Growth

The other side of growth was beautiful to witness as Issa and Lawrence talked about the tough things they experienced (depression, infidelity among other things) that caused their relationship to end. They were vulnerable, non-judgmental and in the moment…with each other. Not just with, or through friends, but as two grown people who’ve learned the value of transparency.

At the end of the night, Lawrence invites Issa in to see his new place and when she is about to leave, she hesitates and then says “What if I don’t want to leave?” It was a moment! I felt her desire and confidence as well as the connection between them, which all transformed into some good ol’ sex.

When Issa decides to walk home the next morning, her head is held high and she welcomes the smile on her face. She is in a great place. She is content with her choice to connect with Lawrence again.

So, What’s Next?

Is it closure or a new beginning? I don’t know, but if it becomes a relationship again, it will have a much stronger foundation. I was thinking Condola may be pregnant, but in the most recent episode (“Lowkey Dumb”) Lawrence tells Issa he talked to her and she is no longer in the picture at all. For some reason, I don’t think so, but I look forward to seeing how it all plays out and sharing my thoughts about the season finale with you next week.
